Night Edition

Release notes

Every version of the game and what changed in it.

News is what is happening in the city and around the game. Release notes list each version of the game: what is new, what got better and what we fixed.

Release notes · Version 0.9.11 ·

Locals, lights and a livelier city

New

  • City regulars: about twenty familiar local faces now live in Vesper City, marked "Local". They pull jobs, train, travel, land in jail or hospital and turn up in the paper. Bust them out of jail, or square up to them.
  • A livelier look: crime results are stamped onto the card like a headline, level-ups and new medals arrive with a banner (and banknotes for a big score), notices come in as telegrams, bars roll and glow, and empty lists get a picture. Prefer it calm? Turn on Reduce motion in your account.
  • Daily rewards now grow with you: cash on days 1, 5 and 7 is a share of a day's income at your level, day 3 brings Respect, day 7 adds a Speakeasy Crate, and every 28 days in a row earns the Faithful medal and a keepsake.

Improved

  • Gyms: a newly active gym takes five sessions to settle into before its speciality works in full, and joining a gym starts the switch cooldown too.
  • A crate from the daily reward can be opened straight away, but can't change hands for its first week.

Fixed

  • Level-ups now trigger everything that should happen when you level up.

Release notes · Version 0.9.10 ·

Every district its own racket

New

  • Crimes by district: every district now has its own crimes, from purse-snatching in the Slums to blackmailing an alderman on Capitol Hill. Nearly sixty crimes in all, sorted into five tiers. The Crimes page shows what's on offer where you stand, and what the rest of the city has.
  • A big job in every district, one per district, each taking your whole nerve bar.
  • Three new courses at the college open the higher tiers: Streetwise, Safecracking and The Big Time.
  • Bad luck softens: a job that falls through still teaches you a little (some XP), a run of failures at the same crime leaves you due a win, and a stretch in jail teaches you the street.
  • Medals have a new top tier, Iron, above Gold, for the truly relentless. The old first step is now Copper.
  • Profiles show a player's job, their Street Reputation, their fight record, their newest medals, and Beta tester and Original member badges.

Improved

  • Job powers each have their own limit; the Evening Star can now bury a story about someone, once a week; a reputation boost lifts you one step for a week.
  • Job leave is 14 days a year, split however you like, and City Hall can declare a holiday when no one gets docked.
  • The City menu's first entry is now called District map.

Fixed

  • Crimes of other districts can't be done from where you stand any more.

Release notes · Version 0.9.9 ·

Favours owed

New

  • Favours: every job shift now earns Favours equal to your rank (rank 1 earns 1, rank 5 earns 5). They are spent in the Workshop and on rank-5 powers, and they stay with you if you change careers.
  • Workshop pieces now cost Favours plus a cash fee, and each rank-5 power costs Favours per use, so the rarest items come from real work.

Improved

  • The front page's wanted poster only shows a reward when someone has really put a price on your head.

Fixed

  • Female portraits no longer get a shadow on the jaw and neck that looked like stubble.

Release notes · Version 0.9.8 ·

A roof for every pocket

New

  • Every home except the free Flophouse can now be let, so there are cheap places to rent from day one: a Rented Room for $40 to $80 a day, a Slum Shack for $100 to $200.

Improved

  • Renting lives inside Properties now: Yours, For sale and For rent, plus To let and Your tenants once you own a place. Old renting links take you to the right tab.

Fixed

  • Owners couldn't find their own homes to let: they're under To let on the Properties page.

Release notes · Version 0.9.7 ·

The plan of Vesper City

New

  • The city has a name: Vesper City.
  • The City page is now a map of the whole town, drawn like an old city plan. Tap a district to see its danger, its landmark, what's there, the rivals about and your stake, then travel from the card. While you're on the road, a little motor car crosses the map and counts down your trip. Prefer the old list? The List view is one tap away and remembered.

Improved

  • Property prices are ten times higher (the Private Island now costs $100 million), and business income rose with them. Buying a place is a real goal now; renting comes first, and you can rent a home from level 1.
  • Coming soon shows the newest plans first.
  • New pictures for the job-made items and the Government page.

Fixed

  • The City page can be looked at while you travel, so you can watch your car cross town (travelling itself stays locked).

Release notes · Version 0.9.6 ·

Clocking in, hitting the road, making the papers

New

  • Jobs want you to show up: one shift a day keeps you safe. After 3 idle days you start losing job points, then you're demoted, then fired, with a warning before each step. Jail, hospital and travel pause the clock, and players under level 5 are protected.
  • Tell your employer: book leave up to 14 days ahead, and your profile says "On leave".
  • The Workshop: from rank 4 of a career you can make items only people in your job can make. They sell on the Bazaar and each has a real use, on crimes or for healing.
  • Rank 5 brings a power you use on other players: the Police release a prisoner, St. Jude's discharges a patient early, Harbour Works makes a Bazaar delivery cheaper, and the Evening Star boosts someone's reputation.
  • On the road: while you travel only some things work. An "On the road" banner counts down your trip, the page takes on a sepia tint, and a notice tells you when you've arrived.
  • When someone joins the Government or is promoted, the whole city hears about it, and the newspaper runs the story.
  • The newspaper has sections (City, Crime, Gangs and more), each with its own front page. Older stories move to the archive only when a page is full.
  • Staff who also play sign in to the staff side with their game account, with two-factor sign-in required.

Improved

  • A new header on phones: one slim bar with a Menu button and shortcuts, roomier bars, and Cash, Gold and Respect at a glance.
  • Your stat bars follow you as you scroll: a strip on computers, small chips on phones.
  • Gold Store: what donator status gives you is explained right under the packs.
  • Crime gear says whether it's Required or Optional, whether you have it, and whether it's used up each time or not used up.
  • Hundreds of missing pictures added: items, medals, banners, landmarks, vaults and more.
  • News and Coming soon are filled: what's been built, what's next, and what's on its way.

Fixed

  • The newspaper's big first letter no longer jumps to the next column.

Release notes · Version 0.9.5 ·

Second helpings and open doors

New

  • Request a beta invite: a new page where anyone can ask for a seat at the table. Confirm your email and, when there's room, staff send your invite in your language.
  • What you earn by playing in the beta comes with you when the city opens.
  • Sign in with Google or Discord, and link or unlink them in Account.
  • Do it again: a crime's result shows on its own card, with a Do it again button and the nerve it costs. The gym has Train again, and rivals Fight again once you're ready.
  • Rivals on the City map: every district shows who hangs about there, and at what levels.
  • A page for every medal: its tiers, how to earn it, your progress, how rare it is and who earned it first, with a button to share it.
  • The Government page, under Help: the staff who keep the city running, what each of them does, the languages they speak and how to report a problem.
  • Staff who also play can choose whether to show their staff badge.

Improved

  • Sign-up makes the difference clear: your login username is private, your game name is the one the city sees. A Suggest one button helps, and spaces become underscores.
  • Crime tools say what they do and whether they're used up or kept. A crime that needs gear shows what you have and what's missing before you try.
  • Leaderboard ranks on profiles open the board with you marked, and items in a showcase open their item pages.
  • A new medal's banner and notice take you straight to its page.

Fixed

  • A few harmless words are no longer refused in game names.
  • Staff replies always show the writer's role, even when they hide their badge.

Release notes · Version 0.9.4 ·

Locked up, sold on and levelled up

New

  • Stricter jail and hospital: a clear list of what you can still do inside, a lock page that shows every charge, and a second alert if your escape fails.
  • Crimes now end three ways: you pull it off, it falls through, or you get caught, and each crime has its own chance of the law arriving.
  • The Bazaar delivers: buy from any district, fill a basket, and your parcel arrives with a notice. Listings now show their district, delivery fee and time.
  • Item pages: tap any item for what it does, where to get it, what needs it, who owns it and what it sells for.
  • Crates show their packing list, so you know what is inside before you buy or open one.
  • A price guide when you list: typical price, range and a recommended price.
  • Gym specialities: one active gym at a time, each with its own speciality, and a cooldown to switch.
  • Over 100 new medals, with tiers, and the option to hide the ones you like to keep quiet. Original members get a medal of their own.
  • Gangs grow: 20 gang levels, wings inside a gang, and a player picker for invites.
  • Below level 5, odds are told in words. A new Gather intel action and a Street Smarts skill and course sharpen them.
  • Profiles are back with more to see, and you can hire a private investigator.
  • Your record, charts of the city and a Today in the city panel.
  • Nights out keep opening hours (5 pm to 7 am), a night's glow stays with you, and the Blind Pig gives a nudge.
  • The public site is full width, with a new footer.
  • Menus show Gold and Help; quick-action tiles put your next move one tap away.

Improved

  • Rivals are matched to your level and badge, so fights feel fairer.
  • Text on top of art is easier to read in both themes.
  • Banners are readable.

Fixed

  • Links and contact details are blocked in everything players write.
  • The players online count never says nobody, and it refreshes live.
  • Tenants go home for free when they leave.

Release notes · Version 0.9.3 ·

Stocks, vaults and a tighter city

New

  • Every company on the City Exchange has its own page: a price chart, its news, dividends, the top shareholders and your own shares.
  • Rare finds: some items can no longer be bought, only found, on a lucky crime, a mugging or a walk across the city.
  • Treasury Men raid the city when prices run hot: a cut of the cash in your pocket, never your bank.
  • Drink has consequences: a drunken fall, a street mugging, a crash or a night in the cells for drunk driving.
  • Bank vaults: the bank holds as much as your vault, and bigger vaults are bought with cash.
  • Renting is between players: owners let the homes they don't live in, from the Brownstone up, at a capped rent, with filters to find one.
  • Jail gets serious: the police remember repeat offenders (longer sentences for a while), the judge takes only so many bribes, you can try a jailbreak, and friends can break you out, or pay your bribe. Friends and gang-mates hear when you're locked up.

Improved

  • Shares can be sold 24 hours after buying them, and selling within three days costs a higher fee.
  • Happiness reflects your whole life: your home, your job and what goes wrong all count, and it helps or hurts your crimes and fights.
  • Pictures on every error page.

Fixed

  • Release notes no longer have their own link in the footer: they are a tab of News.

Release notes · Version 0.9.2 ·

Upkeep, numbers and a fresh front door

New

  • Release notes now live under News, as the "Release notes" category, so one page tells you everything that is going on. The old address still works.
  • The home page shows more of the city: players online, the biggest score this week, the gangs active, the real front page of The Evening Racket, and ten questions answered.
  • City art behind the home page's title and its call to join, behind the sign-in and sign-up pages, and a skyline behind the masthead: by night, and a sepia one on the Morning Edition.
  • A richer Rules page, with an example for every rule, and an About page that tells the story of the city: from the gutter to the Don's chair.

Improved

  • Homes no longer earn money, and every home has an upkeep cost: a place to live, not an income.
